“Design is about content” from Joshua Davis as seen in Computer Arts MAg #163

Let’s think about it. Content … Without it, our work would be nothing. It’s what makes our work shine and gives it meaning.
What would be the purpose of your designs if it didn’t have substance? We all need to convey information in some shape or form. Communication requires two parts, the viewer is the first part, but the content is the other, it is the “what” that needs to be said. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five said it best, “the message!”
The message IS probably the most important aspect of design. Without it we are just fine artists. It is our job as design and visual communication to do just that, communicate. We need to bring the aesthetic and content together to create a cohesive piece of art. We need to be conscious of the content you are working with, do the research, investigate and figure out solution before you begin to work on you project. Whether it be for a website, your portfolio, editorial layouts and even logos … Without an understanding of the content out message will be lost.
The VS project is strictly about content. The topics for each issue are vague and lets the artist be in charge. They are able to create great peice of art by dictating what thier content should be. They are saying something, they make you think.
Just like in issue #5, the topic was about the term War vs Peace … and the artist responses we received was amazing. It ranged from the bombing of japan to our trigger happy president (NOT currently, but at the time, yes I’m talking about GWB) or even immigration. We allowed the topic to be expressed, but the content was created by the artists. Content is so important, just don’t over look it!
