As a member of the AIGA/NY Chapter, I received an email a couple of weeks ago about another great event they were hosting. (wish I could go to all of them, hey make package deals). This was Fresh Dialogue 25, it revolves around design blogs and their influence on us as designers, the craft, as a business model and new ways to interact with the design community. On the panel was not only a great set of design websites, but designer and thinkers who understand their role in the blogisphere.
Moderated by Alice Twemlow, the panel consisted of Khoi Vinh, Design Director of NYTimes.com and Subtraction.com blog. Allan Chochinov, Editor-in-Chief at Core77, and Design Educator at the SVA MFA program. Do what makes you happy. Carlos Segura of Segura Inc., t26, & 5inch, gives us our 5th piece of advice form the pages of Computer Arts. “When you try to be artistic in a satisfactory way, as opposed to a strategic way, you end up with a better product. Be smart … Have a concept. Have a vision.”
As creative people we usually do work for other people such as our bosses, clients and even sometimes friends & family (I suggest stay away from friends and family). Inspiration, it is one of the main focuses of this site. It is all around us, it is all over the internet, it is part of our everyday life. For this Installment of Twewsday, I will be diving in to topic of inspiration on the internet. Inspiration is that spark, light bulb, itch, idea.. whatever else you want to call it. A post on Graphic Design Blog showcases logos that show movement. While it displays a decent set of logos, a number of them break from the foundational principles of logo design — most notably, reproducibility in black and white and halftones. While design may be moving towards the digital arena at an accelerated pace especially with mobile interfaces, logo designers should not dismiss print media yet. Some of the logos featured wouldn’t print very well in black and white or halftones.
